Laminated primitive bow Sámi style

September 24, 2009

I´ll be traveling some 1200 kliks to Inari during today and tomorrow. Again… Its great, since I´m attending a a bow or ´juoksa´ building course given by archaeologist J-P Joona at Sámi oahpahusguovddás. Juoksa is an old Sámi word for a bow, and thats what we´ve been building for three weekends now.

Belly in juoksa is reaction wood from pine, back is birch, and ends of the bow are made from recurving pieces of birch. The bows will be wrapped in birch bark. Nice! Pics following some time next week.
